Where to Stay in Rwanda: Hand-Picked Lodges & Hotels for Your Safari
Rwanda is small enough to cross in a day, yet its safari experiences are spread across four very different landscapes. Misty volcanoes shelter mountain gorillas, an ancient rainforest hosts chimpanzees, open savannah holds the Big Five, and a quiet lake invites you to slow down. Where you sleep decides how much of that you actually enjoy.
At Vazquez Tours & Travel, we work with a carefully chosen selection of hotels and lodges across Rwanda. Each one is picked for its location, service and how well it fits the day you will have on safari. This guide walks you through our preferred stays in Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park and Lake Kivu, so you can picture your journey before you pack.

Kigali: Your Gateway to Rwanda
Most journeys begin and end in Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and safest capitals. A night or two here lets you recover from the flight, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, browse local art and coffee shops, and ease into the trip. The city offers everything from intimate boutique hotels to large international brands, so there is a good fit for every style and budget.

Four Points by Sheraton Kigali
Comfortable, practical and well suited to short stays before or after safari.
A hotel with a story
Hôtel des Mille Collines
One of Rwanda’s best-known hotels, famous worldwide through the story told in the film Hotel Rwanda, and still loved for its central location and hilltop pool.
Add a buffer night in Kigali before your gorilla trek and again before your flight home. A delayed flight then never costs you a permit day or a connection.
Volcanoes National Park: Gorilla Country
This is the heart of most Rwanda itineraries. Volcanoes National Park, in the north-west near the town of Musanze, is home to endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, with the Virunga volcanoes rising behind every lodge. The drive from Kigali takes roughly two to three hours, so you can arrive the day before your trek, rest well and start fresh. See our 1-day Rwanda gorilla trekking itinerary for how a trek day works.
Our preferred stays here range from world-class luxury to friendly, good-value lodges.

Virunga Inn Resort & Spa
A resort-style stay with spa facilities, ideal for relaxing after a long trek.
Gorilla trekking requires a permit issued by the Rwanda Development Board, and treks begin early in the morning. We arrange your permit together with your lodge so the two always line up.
Akagera National Park: Rwanda’s Big Five Safari
In the east, along the Tanzanian border, Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah park and its only Big Five destination. Lions and rhinos have returned in recent years, joining elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos and a rich birdlife around the lakes. It is about two to three hours by road from Kigali, which makes it an easy add-on to a gorilla trip. Game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema and guided walks are the highlights, and a stay of at least two nights lets you enjoy them properly. Read more in our Akagera safari guide or see the 2-day Akagera itinerary.
Salt of Akagera
A stylish, comfortable lodge for travelers who want a polished base for game drives.
Ruzizi Tented Lodge
Tented comfort on the shores of Lake Ihema, where hippos and birds are part of the soundtrack.
Karenge Bush Camp
A more rustic, close-to-nature camp for guests who love the feel of the bush.
Wilderness Magashi Camp
A luxury tented camp in the quieter northern part of the park, known for exclusive guiding.
Wilderness Magashi Peninsula
A luxury stay for an even more secluded Akagera experience, with a strong focus on privacy and wildlife.
The northern camps are remote and best suited to travelers with at least three nights to spare, while the lodges closer to the park’s main areas work well for shorter visits.
Nyungwe National Park: Chimpanzees and Ancient Rainforest
In the south-west, Nyungwe is one of the oldest montane rainforests in Africa and a haven for chimpanzees and many other primates. Visitors come for chimpanzee trekking, the Canopy Walkway high above the forest floor and quiet hikes among tea plantations and waterfalls. The drive from Kigali is long, usually five to six hours, so we recommend a stop along the way and at least two nights in the forest.
Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort
A peaceful stay surrounded by tea fields and forest.
Icyayi Songa Lodge
A warm, welcoming lodge in the tea-growing hills.
Munazi Lodge
A comfortable, relaxed base for forest activities.
Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel
A hillside hotel with wide views over the surrounding landscape.
Chimpanzee treks start early, so choosing a lodge close to the trailhead of your trek means more sleep and less driving on the morning itself.
Lake Kivu: Rest by the Water
After days of trekking, Lake Kivu is the perfect place to unwind. Rwanda’s largest lake stretches along the western border, with lake towns, quiet beaches and green hills rolling down to the shore. Spend your days kayaking, taking boat trips, visiting coffee farms or simply sitting by the water with a cold drink.
Lake Kivu Serena Hotel
A lakeside resort with gardens, a pool and a relaxed pace.
Umurobyi Lodge
A quiet lodge for travelers who want peace and lake views.
Cleo Lake Kivu Hotel
A comfortable hotel right on the lake, good for a restful stopover.
Cormoran Lodge
A lakeside lodge known for its calm setting and warm hospitality.
Lake Kivu pairs well with either Volcanoes or Nyungwe, because it sits between them on a classic western route through Rwanda.
Choosing the Right Stay for Your Safari
There is no single best place to stay in Rwanda, only the best fit for your trip. Four questions help:
What is your main experience?
Gorilla trekking points you to Volcanoes, Big Five game drives to Akagera, and chimpanzees and canopy walks to Nyungwe.
How much time do you have?
Short trips work best with Kigali, Volcanoes and perhaps Akagera. Longer journeys can add Nyungwe and Lake Kivu.
What kind of comfort do you want?
Rwanda offers everything from luxury villas to friendly mid-range lodges, so you can spend where it matters most to you.
Do you want a balanced trip?
Many guests mix one luxury lodge with comfortable city or lakeside stays to keep the trip rewarding and well paced.
Availability is limited at the most sought-after lodges, especially in the high seasons, so booking early gives you the best choice. Browse our Rwanda itineraries for ideas, or check the FAQs.
